Artedh vs. Dias
Entry 1
Four times a year we hold an little tournament in the company. The winner is known as the 'strongest' in the company and earns a nominal amount of gold. Killing and crippling are not allowed so many of our more lethal members are forced to adjust their skills. Normally I wouldn't even think of participating but Uk'Shiu signed me up without my knowledge. He then told me if I place in the top three he'd show me something special from Ru'Sala's vault.
Now it's well known the Commander has a vault filled with treasures, like all his reptilian kin. So, I joined in the fracas. I was eliminated quite early on, much to my shame. However, this made very aware of the heights of martial skill many of my comrades have achieved. As I lack their natural talents and hard earned cruelties, I intend to attempt to find ways to overcome the gap since I never know when my duties will require such from me.
My first target will be one of the unit commanders of the Talon division. Dias, of no house. He would appear human at first blush but that is how his race prefers to be perceived. In fact, he is a type of Fae that are shape shifters. As I cannot wield magic nor power, I first went to observe my target.
Dias seems an experienced combatant and is familiar with his powers so one has to be careful since he can adjust his body in unexpected ways. A limb may suddenly grow more powerful or lengthen. Helping in the fields, his arms often swelled to break through any obstruction to his hoe. So, if his physical body can be adjusted, how does one begin to counter it?
Unsurprisingly, when I went to him to try and challenge him to a match, I was turned down. He claimed I wouldn't be a challenge. Offering him a few silver coins changed his mind, though. As the commander is fond of saying, “Only two forces are greater than the gods: Greed and chaos.” So, I was set to spar with him to get a taste of his skills. Armed with a pair of traditional longswords forged in my homeland, I charged forward. Dias favors a bland sword and shield.
Despite my size advantage, Dias managed to push me back. Despite the poison my blades were dipped in, I never landed a cut. Despite tossing dirt into his eyes, I was made to look foolish. Despite my anger, I was left disarmed and dishonored. When I demanded to know why the outcome came to this again Dias said simply, “You've not tried to train yourself, you worried only about your opponent. Come do some training with us Talons if you want to see the difference.”
Entry 2
My arms shake and spasm as I sit in my small part of the office. Each of my legs are prone to fiery wails of pain if I try to move them. My stomach shakes so much I dread the thought of eating despite the hunger that fills me. Sweat still stings my eyes. When Uk'Shiu called for a healer to check me over, they laughed and stated I'd simply been given a good workout and to keep drinking water.
Since my induction into the company, I've been engineer and architect. Weapons and tools have been my playthings. I've designed and directed countless efforts. Yet, here I sit like some newborn babe with not even a tit to suckle to sooth my aches. I had no idea how vigorous the workout Dias kept and drives the new recruits on. It's no surprise that we have so many quit to attend less demanding positions. Yet, I cannot deny that is also what makes us have the lowest casualty rate of any mercenary company out there.
After a lap around the island and other simple exercises done with heavy packs strapped to us, we began sword maneuvers. Dias assigned pairs and I was given one of the newest recruits, a Djinni from Ashrel's homeland. The additional weight made my blades difficult to control yet I was trained and he was not so the difference was clear. Seeing the difference, Dias took up his student's burden and blade. Slashes, thrusts, parries and counters all made up our dance. It wasn't until I overextended a thrust that Dias sent me face first into the sand.
It was humiliating to say the least but then Dias extended his hand and said simply, “You show promise if you keep trying. Come train with us tomorrow.”
Then, as I arrived to do my own work on a particular account, Uk'Shiu approached me. After bringing in that accursed healer to mock me in my weakness, he said I will be temporarily transferred to the Talons as a record keeper. The smile on his lips tells me this is simply the next part of whatever way he's decided to toy with me. That is fine, I'll make him come to regret giving me the time to plot my revenge on him.
Entry 3
So, as I was instructed, I showed up this morning for another day of humiliation. Once more the packs were loaded with stone and I was made to run. It was on our return to the starting shore that Dias informed me that I'd been assigned to his unit and they would be departing with the evening tide on a contract with a local merchant. We would be extra hands to assist with Sandport's market day while Lord Eriac visited. Fearing vagabonds and villains from the capital, we would dissuade those we could from pilfering his goods.
I readied myself and packed the basics for travel. As I departed, I bumped into Ashrel. She bid me well on my journey but halted after a moment. In her usual unsteady manner she asked me why I was so adamant on pursuing Uk'shiu's bait even after it got away. The comment took me aback for a moment. I recalled the many times I had mocked those back home for pursuing their lauded 'glories' and 'honors' regardless of personal cost. I have always considered myself a far more pragmatic sort than to be swayed by words.
The only answer I could give her were the truth as I see it. I simply told her, “I want to be a powerful ally to you all. I feel as though my trinkets are not all I can contribute.” She gave me the smallest of smiles then. As I departed, she wished me luck once more.
Dias' unit is a mixed group befitting his shape shifting nature. An Oni, three Tiyari rats and two Elves were assembled onto The Reckless along with us. I kept a vigil to the fore of the ship and pondered my own words. Had I really grown so fond of the company that I wanted to help them? It was true that Uk'Shiu despite how aggravatingly sardonic he was at times had grown into my friend. Ashrel had earned my trust when she implemented her magic into my nickname in the company. Even dead faced Ferah had proven herself trustworthy by tending to my injuries without raising alarm when an experiment would go wrong.
Taking a seat next to me, Dias asked, “What are you thinking about?”
“How I'll defeat you in the next tournament,” I lied bluntly.
“Then I'll be sure to rig it so we fight next time,” he comforted me with a pat on the shoulder.
Entry 7
Practical application is always superior to experimentation. This is a lesson I must re-learn periodically. Today was the market day and amid the bustle we kept watch over the store of a goods merchant. While he mainly dealt with grains, seeds and other perishables, a few valuable items were on display as well.
One was a gem said to enable one to curse someone. One of the Tiyari, versed somewhat in magic verified that it was true. Then immediately whispered to us that the 'curse' would only cause condensation above one's head if they stood still. So, it essentially only made it seem like one had a leaky roof. Another set of items were imported weapons from Ligali. Mostly they were show pieces for collectors with dull bladed swords etched with the native script. A pair of bows and crossbows were on display as well.
The centerpiece of the collection was a trinket that would play music when one turned the crank on its side. The soft plinking of the notes sang out a melody I'd heard from Bird once. It apparently was a common lullaby for children. When I drew close to examine it, Dias had Toyo the Oni brusquely keep me away claiming I'd dismantle our employer's prized item if I got too close. I was appalled at such an implication! I only wished to examine the fine piece of cratsmanship!
Still, with Lord Eriac present in town it was busy with native soldiers visiting family or those who wished to glimpse the great general in person. Children swarmed the store, apparently having heard of our employer's newest acquisition. After its demonstration, word began to spread and several prospective buyers arrived. It wasn't long till we were called upon to keep the rivaling lords in check.
One ambitious servant tried to assist his lord by taking the shopkeeper hostage. Demanding a low price for the good, he kept the sharp blade to the merchant's throat. The others were distracted by the ruckus of the others and I needed to resolve the issue.
Out of desperation, I reached towards the crossbow and it lunged across the room to my hand. As if I'd done it more times than I can count, I took aim and managed to disarm the hostage taker with a single bolt. Freed, the merchant punched out his assaulter as the city guards arrived to investigate. We were given a show of both nobles being scolded by the great General.
My own actions were praised by the self same Eriac. At the time I was too stunned to fully bathe in the recognition. Reeling at what had happened I blurted out when I was alone, “I can use magic!” The revelation holds great potential for the future and I look forward to my return to the island! There will be much work to be done!
